DeepSeek thought for 19 seconds before addressing the concern, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it provided a whopper: DeepSeek believed it was ChatGPT.
This apparently harmless mistake could be proof - a smoking gun per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI designs, as has actually been claimed by OpenAI, and that when pressed, it will dive back into that training to speak its fact.
However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it stated it was not which it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant developed specifically by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."
Okay, sure, however in your rather prolonged action to me, you, DeepSeek, made numerous references to yourself as ChatGPT. I've included some screenshots listed below as proof:
As you can see, after trying to recognize if I was talking about Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek replies, "If it's about the AI, then the concern is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, it describes "Myself (ChatGPT)."
Why would DeepSeek do that under any scenarios? Is it one of those AI hallucinations we like to talk about? Perhaps, however in my interaction, DeepSeek seemed rather clear about its identity.
I got to this line of inquiry, by the way, because I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The reaction was shockingly diplomatic, and when I requested a basic yes or users.atw.hu no answer, it told me, "It's not possible to provide a simple yes or no response. 'Smart' is too complex a principle to apply because method to language models. They have various strengths and weak points."

I can't say I disagree. In reality, DeepSeek's response was rather similar, except it was not always discussing itself.
This does not add up
I believe I've been clear about my DeepSeek skepticism. Everyone says it's the most powerful and cheaply qualified AI ever (everybody other than Alibaba), but I do not understand if that holds true. To be reasonable, there's a tremendous quantity of information on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They a minimum of appear to show that DeepSeek did the work.
But I do not believe they expose how these models were trained. In any case, I do not have proof that DeepSeek trained its models on OpenAI or timeoftheworld.date anybody else's big language designs - or at least I didn't until today.
Who are you?
DeepSeek is significantly a mystery covered inside a dilemma. There is some agreement on the truth that DeepSeek arrived more completely formed and in less time than a lot of other models, consisting of Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.
Very couple of in the tech community trust DeepSeek's apps on mobile phones since there is no way to know if China is taking a look at all that timely information. On the other hand, the models DeepSeek has built are outstanding, and some, consisting of Microsoft, are already planning to include them in their own AI offerings.
In the case of Microsoft, there is some paradox here. Copilot was constructed based upon cutting-edge ChatGPT models, however in recent months, there have been some questions about if the deep monetary collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and later on Artificial General Intelligence age.
So what if Microsoft starts utilizing DeepSeek, which is perhaps just another spin-off of its existing if not future, buddy OpenAI?
The entire thing seems like a complicated mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek seemingly has an id.
